Released to celebrate the 95th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, this 2021 Sovereign Gold Proof coin features St George & the Dragon on its reverse and, by special permission, Mary Gillick’s portrait of the Queen on its obverse.

The Mary Gillick effigy, which has not been used on Sovereigns for over 50 years, dates back to Her Majesty’s accession to the throne in 1952 at the tender age of just 25. Considered to be Her Majesty’s favourite effigy, it is still used today on the special Maundy Money which is presented to honoured recipients during the traditional Maundy Thursday ceremony every Easter.
