Behind the Craft - VE Day

VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) on May 8, 1945, marked the end of WWII in Europe with Germany's unconditional surrender after nearly six years of conflict. Millions celebrated across Allied nations, with over a million people flooding the streets of the United Kingdom alone. In London, vast crowds gathered at Trafalgar Square and along The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, their daughters including the future Queen Elizabeth II, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill greeted the cheering masses.

The celebrations featured music, dancing, and flag-waving as people rejoiced in the long-awaited victory. However, amid the jubilation was a profound sense of reflection on the war's devastating human toll. VE Day remains a powerful symbol of hope, unity, and the triumph of peace over tyranny, honoring both the bravery of those who served and the resilience of nations that stood together against unimaginable adversity.
