Behind the Craft - 2021 Sovereign Coin

Released to celebrate the 95th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, this 2021 Sovereign Gold Proof coin features St George & the Dragon on its reverse and, by special permission, Mary Gillick’s portrait of the Queen on its obverse.

The Mary Gillick effigy, which has not been used on Sovereigns for over 50 years, dates back to Her Majesty’s accession to the throne in 1952 at the tender age of just 25. Considered to be Her Majesty’s favourite effigy, it is still used today on the special Maundy Money which is presented to honoured recipients during the traditional Maundy Thursday ceremony every Easter.

Stories

Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York was born in London on the 21st of April 1926, the first grandchild of King George V and third in the line of succession behind her uncle, the Prince of Wales, and her father.

With the abdication of her uncle King Edward VIII and the accession of her father as King George VI in 1936, the ten-year old Princess became heiress presumptive. Princess Elizabeth then ascended the throne on the 6th of February 1952 after the sad death of her beloved father.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has gone on to achieve many milestones during her reign and, on the 9th of September 2015, Her Majesty became the longest serving monarch in British and UK history, surpassing the reign of her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria. In a speech given at the time, Her Majesty said, with typical humility:

"Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones - my own is no exception - but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness"

The Sovereign has one of the world’s most tightly controlled coin specifications, a very precise 7.98g of gleaming 916.7 quality gold. It is a fitting tribute to Her Majesty as we celebrate her 95th birthday.

Each strictly limited-edition Sovereign features Mary Gillick’s elegant 1952 portrait of Her Majesty, struck to our highest proof quality finish and presented in a luxury display case with numbered certificate of authenticity.
