BEHIND THE CRAFT

Behind the Craft - Justice

Justice has been described as the mid-point between selfishness and selflessness, where someone has or strives to have just enough, not too much or too little. It is a virtue of balance, which is why statues of Justice are often shown holding a set of weighing scales.

The Sovereign’s relationship to Justice has evolved from a very practical role to the more symbolic one seen today. Where once upon a time the King or Queen was known as the ‘Fount of Justice’ and played a key role in actually enforcing of the laws of the land, today justice is carried out in the name of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Stories

Justice

The ‘Queen’s Virtues’ were first introduced to the public as part of the Victoria Memorial situated outside Buckingham Palace, its enormous central monument featuring beautifully sculptured allegorical figures that personify:

• Victory
• Truth
• Charity
• Justice
• Courage
• Constancy
The Victoria Memorial was commissioned shortly after the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901. Eminent sculptor Sir Thomas Brock was briefed to design the central monument in tribute to her extraordinary reign, and his proposal was approved by King Edward VII in the October of that same year. The monument and the surrounding memorial gardens were formally unveiled by King George V in 1911.

Brock’s monument takes centre stage. The gold-gilded winged angel of Victory stands at the very top, with the figures of Courage and Constancy at her feet. The four sides of the memorial’s lower level feature the figures of Truth, Justice and Charity and a magnificent, seated sculpture of Queen Victoria.

Elles Kloosterman’s design is inspired by Brock’s statue. Justice is represented by an angel carrying a sword in her left hand. Her right hand protects the weak and oppressed, while the scales of Justice are carried by the child at her side.

The 2022 Justice 1oz gold proof coin is completed by The East India Company mint mark on its left-hand side, and on its right the Latin phrase:

FIAT IUSTITIA
which translates as
LET JUSTICE BE DONE.
