Behind the Craft - US Trade Dollar

Trade Dollars were introduced in the 15th Century when the ‘Spanish Dollar’ became a standardised currency in international trade. Worth eight Spanish Reales, these Spanish Dollars were the original “pieces of eight”!

By the 19th Century the Mexican peso had followed the Spanish Dollar as a key currency in trade with China, where it was preferred to the $US due to its higher silver content.

This meant US businesses had to convert their dollars into pesos in order to trade with China, losing money in commission fees each time, a problem that was resolved in 1873 with the introduction of the US Trade Dollar.

Stories

History of the US Trade Dollar

United States Trade Dollars were introduced in the Coinage Act of 1873. Primarily struck for use in export trade with China they were also legal tender within the US for payments up to $5 and many found their way back into the domestic market.

However, due to an increase in mining in the US the price of silver soon dropped below the face value of the coin, leading many banks and businesses to refuse to accept them and the Trade Dollar’s domestic legal tender status to be revoked in 1876.
Production continued the following year purely for export purposes but, in 1878, minting of the circulating-standard coin ceased altogether, although a number of collector-issue Proof quality coins were struck until 1885.

To this day the Trade Dollar remains the only US coin ever to be demonetized. This left many US citizens holding silver coins that they had no chance of spending, a hardship which was eased in 1887 when people were given a one-off six-month window to redeem their US Trade Dollars at face value.

The 2023 ‘Modern’ US Trade Dollar pays tribute to its historic predecessor with a new design by celebrated artist Chiara Principe struck in one ounce of fine gold, every fine detail emphasised by our highest Proof quality finish.

The design sets Lady Liberty, a symbol of freedom and diversity, against a backdrop of a simple globe to represent the coin’s role in international trade, upon which stands a map of North America outlined from the flag of the United States.
